If you read our beliefs, you would know that we strive to be as transparent as possible. Below is everything you need to know about where and how Oath Essentials’ bamboo toothbrush is made. If we missed something, please contact us.

Where is Oath Essentials’ bamboo toothbrush manufactured?
Our toothbrushes are manufactured in China. Why? It’s simple. The bamboo used in the toothbrush handle naturally grows in China. Manufacturing close to the source of raw material reduces transport costs and pollution.

No matter what other companies claim, bamboo toothbrushes are all manufactured in China. Don’t be fooled. They may be packaged in another country and bristles may be supplied from another country but the manufacturing of bamboo toothbrushes is done in China.

Truth be told, we did reach out more than twice to a company in Oregon that claims their toothbrush is made from locally grown bamboo but got no response. We were not able to verify this claim. If you have proof of a North American-made bamboo toothbrush, please send us the info so we can update our website, by contacting us.

What is bamboo toothbrush made from?

The handle is made from Moso bamboo. Bamboo is a type of grass.
This type of bamboo reaches full maturity in 1 to 5 years depending on the species. It grows up fast. Up to 1m (3 feet) in a day!

Once harvested, bamboo will continue to grow new shoots from its root system. No additional planting or cultivation is required.

Bamboo requires no chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizer to grow and thrive. Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial and water-resistant.

The bamboo used in our toothbrush handle comes from an FSC certified forest. Our bamboo is harvested by hand and there are no fertilizers or pesticides used. It is grown naturally in Anhui Province, China.

Bristles are made from BPA-Free nylon-6. Why nylon? Because it is still the best material available for optimal oral health. The only biodegradable alternatives are boar/pig hair, badger hair, and corn starch. That’s not something we want to brush our teeth with. The packaging is made from FSC certified Kraft paper and can be recycled or composted.

How to Use

Use just like any other toothbrush. The only difference is you should dry the handle when you are done. See Care and Disposal below for more information.

How long do bamboo toothbrushes last?

Your bamboo toothbrush will last as long as a normal toothbrush. It all depends on how hard you brush. Dentists recommend changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months and so do we.

Are bamboo toothbrushes sanitary?

Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial. It is very dense and resists water penetration. That being said, if you soak it in water and put it in an enclosed, hot, and humid space, it will form mold. It is best to let your toothbrush dry naturally in an open-top cup and dry the handle after each use.

Are bamboo toothbrushes effective for cleaning teeth?

The quality of brushing remains the same regardless of the type of material used to make the handle. Good brushing depends more on the bristles, the head of the toothbrush, and the proper brushing technique. We use DuPont bristles, which are the same bristles every other major toothbrush brand uses.

How long does it take for a toothbrush to decompose?

If we’re talking about plastic then 400 to 1000 years. Moreover, it never truly breaks down. It just breaks into smaller pieces called micro-plastics.
Our bamboo toothbrush handle will decompose in a compost pile in less than a year. Please remember to remove and dispose of the bristles before composting.

Which toothbrush bristles are the best?

Our bristles are made by DuPont. They invented nylon and are the leading manufacturer for toothbrush bristles worldwide. That’s why we chose them for our toothbrush.
They are made from BPA-Free nylon-6. Why nylon? Because it is still the best material available for optimal oral health.
The only fully biodegradable alternatives are boar/pig hair, badger hair, and corn starch. That’s not something we want to brush our teeth with.

Care & Disposal

Keep your brush dry. Bamboo is a material that will stay best when stored dry. That is why enclosed cups, which may collect water, are not recommended. We recommend that you keep your toothbrush in an open-air toothbrush holder, open-top cup, or other dry areas.

Rinse and care for bristles just as you would with a regular toothbrush.
Bamboo is a natural material that will change appearance over time. The top portion of the bamboo, which goes into your mouth, may appear lighter or darker over time. This is normal and will not affect your brushing experience.

Disposal

Do not dispose of the toothbrush or packaging in the trash! Sure, the handle is all-natural bamboo and the package is natural Kraft paper but it will not compost or biodegrade properly in a landfill.

Plastic bags cut off oxygen, which is necessary for composting. Instead, it rots and creates methane. A proper compost pile is oxygenated and produces CO2. Methane is almost 300 times worse than CO2 and methane holds 25 times more heat than CO2 in the atmosphere.

How to recycle your bamboo toothbrush?

Step 1: Recycle the envelope and box packaging or compost it.

Step 2: Use a pair of pliers to pull out the bristles. When you do this, you will notice a tiny metal staple that is used to clamp the bristles to the handle. Put the bristle and tiny staples in the trash. We do not recommend recycling the bristles because they get caught up in machinery at the recycling plant and may blow away if placed in your curbside bin.

Step 3: Throw the handle in your backyard compost pile or curbside compost bin. You can also use it to mark herbs in your garden.

Repurpose: Extend the life of your bamboo toothbrush and use it for cleaning around the house or garage. Great for cleaning small items.
